An Eerie Object

Gemma, Sam and Emma were three friends destined to have a good time. Emma was the daring one, who was never frightened to try anything and always spoke her mind, where as Gemma was shy and was a bit reluctant to try daring and exciting things. Sam; she was a bit of both, anything suited her. On this particular night, the three friends had decided to go on to the beach for a walk. Knowing it was cold and foggy outside they wore their scarves tight around their necks and their gloves covering every inch of their hands. They had decided to meet at the fair, so they could head straight for the beach and begin to have a good time. As Sam walked alone, to the designated meeting place, the sky darkened, the breeze sent shivers down her spine but the thought of meeting up with her friends gave Sam a secure feeling. The Wind howled viciously, as Sam spotted her friends at the fair gates, behind the hazy mist. â€Å"Hey Girls! Is that you?† Sam shouted in hesitation. Sam kept on walking in the direction of her friends, until they seen her. â€Å"Hi Sam, what took you so long?† questioned Emma, with a shiver in her voice. â€Å"What do you mean ‘What took you so long' I'm early, like usual† Sam argued to her friends. â€Å"Oh well, we must be even earlier, Emma† Gemma turned and said to her friend. Without saying another word, they began to walk through the fair, arm in arm, to protect their fears. An eerie feeling sprung upon the three friends and none of them liked it. Clinching each other tightly, they could smell fear was near. Sam being brave spoke about her feelings † Girls, I really don't like this, would it be o.k if we went for a walk another night?† â€Å"Oh do we have to? The night is young and adventures are approaching, I sense it,† Emma spoke, sounding disappointed by Sam's question. â€Å"The only thing you sense, Emma, is fear like the rest of us!† screamed Sam bitterly. Shocked by her friends attempt to start an argument, Emma spilled questions and ideas out of her big mouth. â€Å"What if I do, What if I sense both? Fear and adventure, doesn't it appeal to you?† Sam and Gemma looked at each other terrifyingly. Emma wasn't sure which of them would voice their answer first. A minute passed by and silence fell among the trio of girls. â€Å"No it doesn't! Do you realise you sound crazy saying that? Emma it didn't even appeal to you before now, did it?† Gemma shyly admitted, questioning her friend angrily. â€Å"Maybe not, but it does now, so if you don't want to come on an adventure that is your choice but I am no matter what!† Emma decided, giving her friends a choice. As Emma bravely walked off, the fear was back and she was petrified. The wind blew her long brown hair into her face and she struggled to see the view ahead. The fair rides cast a large shadow over the ground and Emma realised she was in the darkness, ALONE! Footsteps crept up behind Emma, but Emma vowed to herself not to look back. This was so she didn't look afraid, if her friends happened to still be standing there and saw her. â€Å"You didn't think we'd just let you go alone, anything could happen to you and if it did, we wouldn't forgive ourselves for leaving you† Gemma announced, speaking for herself and Sam. Emma was stunned by her friends' actions, but secretly knew they would follow on. Once again they were arm in arm, taking big strides, so they would reach the beach quicker. Light peaked out from the exit of the fairground and a smile mounted on the friend's faces. The Beach was now in front of the girls; it's golden grains of sand being thrown around by the vicious wind. Unlinking their arms, they all sat down on the edge of the sand and proceeded to take their socks and shoes off; so they could feel the golden sand beneath their feet. â€Å"Come on girls, this is where our adventure beings† Emma signalled for the girls to follow her. Gemma and Sam couldn't believe what they had let themselves in for, Emma wasn't one for little adventures, they always had to be big where she was concerned. Traipsing behind, Gemma and Sam were bored, already! â€Å"Arghhhhh!† Emma screamed at the top of her voice. â€Å"Emma, Emma, are you aright?† Shouted Emma's friends as they ran over to where she was situated. As Gemma and Sam approached Emma she was slumped on the sand with her head down, laughing uncontrollably. As she lifted her head up, her laughter turned into seriousness and the smile was wiped from her, as the look on Gemma and Sam's faces wasn't one Emma would want to mess with. â€Å"We thought you were in danger, I can't believe you were only joking on1† Sam screamed in an angry tone. Sam stomped off and Gemma followed. They weren't at all impressed with Emma's actions and they regretted agreeing to go on an adventure. â€Å"Girls, wait for me!† Emma called out to her friends as she attempted to get he balance when standing up. Emma was alone now and her friends were just shadows in the distance, if only she hadn't of screamed, she didn't even know why she did it! Kicking the sand as she walked, Emma heard voices, were these voices the ones of Gemma and Sam or was there someone else on the beach? Emma thought. â€Å"Emma, quick! Over here!† Voices shrieked Emma ran as fast as she could in the direction she heard the voices from. Being a curious person, she couldn't wait to find out what was going on. Reaching her destination, Emma saw Gemma and Sam standing firmly in the sand, admiring a strange object. â€Å"Oh, its you two† sighed Emma â€Å"What's that?† â€Å"Yes its us two and we thought you would know what it was† Exclaimed Gemma. The object they were looking at was a star shape; it was not very big and had, what looked like, inscriptions carved into it. Kneeling down, Sam took a closer look at the mysterious object, which lay in front of them. Now closer, Sam seen that he object was some sort of a box, maybe it held an object inside, Sam thought to herself. â€Å"Aren't you going to pick it up and give us a closer look? We want to see it as well†, Emma whined. Being cautious about touching it, Sam reached over and placed her hands on each side of the object, preparing to pick it up and hand it to her friends. Beginning to lift it up, Sam suddenly felt her hands starting to burn and immediately dropped it! Cries of pain were heard from Sam! â€Å"What's happened? Are you alright, Sam?† Emma and Gemma asked their friend, who appeared to be in tremendous amounts of pain. â€Å"My hands, they're really hurting! The box, it burnt them, as I picked it up!† Sam stated. â€Å"Maybe, the box didn't want to be found, what if it's powers haunt us, forever?† Emma asked rhetorically. â€Å"Sam, Emma might be right, although I don't believe in secret powers and all that malarkey like she does† Gem said with a thinking look upon her face. â€Å"What are we going to do with it then? We could bury it?† Sam suggested. â€Å"Yeah, good idea but there is one slight problem† Gemma announced, â€Å"Someone else might find it†. â€Å"That's the risk we have to take, Gemma† Sam told her friend. Agreeing to the idea of burying it, Gemma and Emma knelt down and the three friends began to dig a hole to put the star-shaped object in. Ten minutes later, the sky had got darker and the hole was now deep enough for the object. Emma, being brave, stood up and kicked the object into the hole. It fell to the bottom and then girls wearily filled the hole with sand. â€Å"Phew, I'm glad that is over, Can we just go straight home now?† Sam sighed with relief and wanted so badly to go home, where she would be safe. â€Å"Come on let's go† Emma said, as she pulled Sam up from her kneeling position. â€Å"Ouch, be careful, my hands are still sore!† Sam moaned at Emma. Once again they were arm in arm and they started their journey home. â€Å"I hope our next adventure is not as painful as this one† Sam laughed. â€Å"And I think we should make a promise to stay together at all times and never to tell anyone about ‘The Object' â€Å"Emma suggested with a smile. â€Å"We promise we won't leave you Emma and Promise we won't tell† Gemma and Sam promised, in a ‘forgive us please tone'. When they reached the fair gates, they said their goodbyes and wished each other a safe journey home.

And last, but not the least – they bring love and affection to humans and love to sleep with their owners and are believed to ease problems with health. Cats similar to dogs get bored, and therefore they need toys to keep them occupied. If you give them all the possible attention, they will be great animals. Then if we talk about the differences between them, dogs used to live in a pack in the wild, thus, they require being with the pack in captivity, therefore they consider you and your family to be their family. In the wild the dogs hunt in a company of their kind while on the other hand, cats usually hunt by their own selves, and do not need any company. Certainly they can live together, although they do not require being with one another or with anyone else. Dogs are usually extremely playful and want to have a job to do. Dogs are very active animals that can help people to do many kinds of things like exercise, play a game, and so on. Dogs love to be petted, and can sit on your lap for hours whereas cats do not want to sit with you and some of them dislike being held. Dogs are active during the day and sleep at nights while cats are active at night, and can sleep all day long. Dogs are extremely communicative and use their body language and bark to express their feelings whereas cats can meow, but they are definitely not  as noisy as dogs, and much less expressive with their body language. Dogs are strong animals, so they participate in games, but cats just let it happen around it. In addition to this, dogs are social animals that need communication, while cats are independent, and do not need it. Cats have retractable claws, unlike dogs. Cats seem to be very well-balanced and a lot more flexible as compare to the dogs. Most would say that cats have a higher intelligence than dogs do however; dogs are somewhat smarter than cats in the area of verbal command. For example, you can call your dog by name and usually it will come to you, unlike a cat. There are various similarities and differences that dogs and cats hold to each other. This compare and contrast between the two animals can be supposed in different ways. Some may think more highly of cats due to their intelligence, while others may choose a dog because of their companionship.

Dramatic techniques Essay In act four Proctor has to make the decision whether he should or should not confess. Arthur Miller uses dramatic techniques such as the use of descriptive stage directions. These tell you of the feelings emotions and actions of the characters such as in the opening of the act were Miller sets the scene by saying The place is in darkness but for the moonlight seeping through the bars. Arthur miller also describes sounds such as the sound of footsteps the shouting and the drums used to add drama and tension to the act. Hale has considerably changed from when we first saw him, as now he is no longer self-assured or confident like when he was first introduced. The audience sees a change in which Hale is presented as a different character to the beginning of the play, Hale is now described as being guilty and he is noticed to be different by the other characters They look at him for an instant in silence. He is steeped in sorrow, exhausted, and more direct then he ever was as opposed to his first description of a Tight skinned intellectual. Hale decides to try to convince Elizabeth to help them as they think that she is the only one who can convince proctor to confess, and as Proctor is a respected man within the village they hope that the other accused will also confess. Hale knows that neither he nor Parris could convince Proctor to confess so Elizabeth is there only hope of persuading Proctor before dawn.  When hale pleads with Elizabeth to talk to Proctor to persuade him to confess she is silent and will not speak to hale, but Hale then tells her Proctor will die at dawn, which makes Elizabeth ask if she can speak with proctor. Elizabeth dose not promise to convince proctor to confess however she pleads with Danforth to allow her to speak with Proctor as she knows that he will die at dawn and she wants to see him one last time before he is hung. Proctors appearance is now a visual shock as he is a contrast to when he was first introduced, as he is now a shadow of his former self. When we were first introduced to Proctor he is described as powerful of body and not easily led which is the opposite of how he is described now. Proctor is now described as being another man, bearded, filthy, his eyes misty as though webs had overgrown them. This shows the audience he is no longer the once proud Proctor who was gained the respect of people as he entered the room. Proctor is pressured to confess as he loves Elizabeth and dose not want to leave her as now she has a child on the way and when Proctor questioned her on what he should do she told him I wan you living John, thats sure. Elizabeth also tells him that a hundred or more have confessed. However Proctor is also pressured not to confess as people which he knows have not confessed such as Giles. Elizabeth tell Proctor that Giles stood mute and did not answer his indictment so that he would be pressed and die a Christian death, she also tell him that Giles said only two words More weight. This adds conflict to proctors decision as Giles was an old man and yet he died for his beliefs so that his sons would get his farm. Proctor is also told that Rebecca nurse has still not confessed. Proctors body language towards Elizabeth is different to how he used to address her. Proctor now shows himself to be guilty and dose not know what to do with great force of will but not quite looking at her this show the audience that Proctor dose want to talk to her but his guilt is holding him back. In this section of act four Proctor is shown to be in turmoil as he is not sure whether or not Elizabeth dose want him back or not and whether or not she loves him still pauses- then with a flailing of hope. Emotive language is used in the stage directions to suggest that Proctors decision to confess or not is emotional words such as pain and agony show how Proctor feels although he is not physically in pain he is emotionally torn between his the decision he must now make. Proctor realises that Elizabeth still cares for him when she tells him that there is still some good in him. This adds to Proctors confidence allowing some of his guilt to be lifted and gives him the strength to look into her eyes and ask for her forgiveness. Elizabeth realises that Proctor is about to makes his decision and knows what it will be this adds to the emotion. Proctors decision to confess is dramatic as it builds up wen he rises slowly until he cant hold in what he wants to say anymore and shouts out in great pain Enough, enough-. Proctors decision to confess leads the audience to believe that because he has decided to confess then maybe this will influence Elizabeth and Rebecca nurse to confess. It also makes the audience think that Proctor will live.  The speed of Danforth and the others adds tension as it shows the audience the urgency of getting Proctor to sign as it will soon be to late as its not only Proctor they want to confess. Danforth also wants Rebecca as they feel that hanging these people will cause the villagers to rebel as Proctor and Rebecca, are respected people. Danforth is and the others are so rushed as time is running out and dawn is nearing this means that it will soon be to late for them to save Rebecca and also Proctor may change his mind to confess.

The detrimental effects of depression and global war generated popular demands for widespread social, political and economic reforms. Furthermore, wartime controls made ordinary citizens believe that economic planning was the best way to restore economic growth and equity (Painter, 1999). The United States, however, underwent a shift to the right. Republican domination of both houses of Congress after the 1946 midterm elections led to the strengthening of conservative opposition to the New Deal. Despite this accomplishment, the Republicans were unable to contain the main achievements of the New Deal – unionization of heavy industry, Social Security, agricultural subsidies and civil rights militancy. Throughout Europe and in parts of the Third World, meanwhile, chaotic social, political and economic conditions resulted in the emergence of Communist parties and other leftist groups (Painter, 1999). The aforementioned developments prompted Washington to assume that a new foe was in its midst – Communism. McCarthyism: The Great American Red Scare The period from the late 1940s to the mid-1950s was characterized with the rise of Communism in China and several nations in Eastern Europe. As a result, the US became fearful that it was losing the power struggle against the Soviet Union – a battle that was later known as the Cold War. This apprehension was exacerbated by suspicions that traitors within the American government were aiding the spread of Communism (Fitzgerald 2006). Such paranoia on the part of the US eventually resulted in the era of McCarthyism, a chapter in American history that was synonymous with state-sponsored Communist witch-hunts and anticommunist hysteria among the populace. Red Alert On the night of February 9, 1950, a senator from Wisconsin named Joseph McCarthy gave a Lincoln Day speech to the Republican Women’s Club of Wheeling, West Virginia. His speech on that particular evening, however, had absolutely nothing to do with Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. McCarthy’s address instead focused on the hostile relations between the US and the Soviet Union. He warned the audience that the Soviet Union intended to spread Communism throughout the US by sending spies to infiltrate the US government (Fitzgerald 2006). To prove this claim of his, McCarthy held up a piece of paper and reportedly stated: I have here in my hand a list of 205 (men) that were known to the secretary of state as being members of the Communist Party and who, nevertheless, are still working and shaping the policy of the State Department. (p. 10) This was a very grave allegation. The State Department is the government institution responsible for the establishment of foreign policy. The presence of Communists in such an important organization would therefore cripple the US in its fight against Communism worldwide. They would most likely work as spies, providing the Soviet Union with sensitive information about atomic weapons and US military and political strategy (Fitzgerald 2006).

The Chimney Sweeper | Analysis William Blake was a famous writer of the Romantic Age which took place in 1832. William Blake wrote two poems called The Chimney Sweeper. The first poem had to do with innocence. The second Chimney Sweeper poem by William Blake had to do with experience. Even though both poems have the same title doesnt necessarily mean that theyre the same. They have a few things in common, but also have a plethora of items that are different. In both poems called The Chimney Sweeper, they share similarities and differences between narration, rhyme scheme, tone, and theme. Blake also shows how both poems are influenced Romantically, he gives the reader a visual and represents many symbols that are used in todays society. As far as rhyme scheme, they both have words that rhyme at the end of each line and stanza. The boy says When my mother dies I was very young, and my father sold me while yet my tongue. (lines 1-2 p. 85) In songs of experience, Blake writes A little black thing among the snow Crying weep, weep, in notes of woe! (lines 1-2 p90) Both poems are also expressed romantically in a few ways. In the Romantic days, writers felt there was a new literature being birthed. The poetry had to do a lot with humanity and nature. Poets tended toward emotion and child like perspective. Poets also showed much regard for the natural scenes and used words like child, imagination, and nature because they thought they were popular. (Mellown p. 1) In Songs of Innocence the young boy tells his story. The boy is about six or seven years old. Much of the imaginative power of the poem comes from the tension between the childs naivetà © and the subtlety of Blakes own vision. (Mellown p.1) In the first stanza, he talks about his way of life. He talks about how his mother dies. He was sold as an apprentice by his father. His present life revolves around working, calling through the streets for more work, and at the end of the day sleeping on soot, a realistic detail since the boys did indeed make their beds on bags of soot they had swept from the chimneys. (Mellown p.1) The second stanza introduces a young boy named Tom Dacre, who comes to join the workers and is initiated into his new life by a haircut. Tom cries as he gets his hair cut off, but the speaker makes him feel better by saying Hush, Tom! Never mind it, for when your heads bare, you know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair (lines 6-7 p. 85). What that means is all of the dirt from sweeping chimneys wont get in his hair. Tom takes the advice and goes to sleep happily. (Mellown p. 2) The next three stanzas give the substance of the dream. Tom dreams that thousands of sweepers locked in coffins are released by an angel. Suddenly, they find themselves in a pastoral landscape where, freed from their burdens, they bathe in a river and then rise up to the clouds. There, the angel tells Tom, if hed be a good boy, / Hed have God for his father never want joy. The dream is an obvious instance of wish fulfillment, and its pathos rests on the fat that while it reveals the childs longing to escape, the opening and closing of the poem make it clear that his only ways of escape are dreams and death. (Mellown p. 2) What this means for Tom is that maybe when he is dreaming he can escape what he goes thorough in life and just be happy. The last quatrain opens with a brutal contrast. Having dreamed of playing in the sun, Tom awakes, and the sweepers begin their days work, a day to be spent in the total darkness of the cramped chimneys. Yet, restored by his dream, Tom is happy, and the poem ends with the pious moral, akin to the angels speech, So if all do their duty, they need not fear harm. (Mellown p. 2) So he goes through the rest of his life knowing that heaven was in his future as long as he was good. In The Chimney Sweeper, songs of experience, Blake talks about some of the things a little black boy goes through. Using the same rhyme scheme as songs of innocence he says A little black thing among the snow crying weep, weep in notes of woe! Where are thy father and mother? Say? They are both gone up to the church to pray. (lines 1-4 p. 90) In the next stanza Blake describes how his parents are at church praying for him because he is so happy on the outside but not showing his true pain. He sings and dances because he is happy and his parents think that everything is ok and no damage has been done. He says And are gone to praise God and his Priest and King, who make up a heaven of our misery. (lines 11-12 p.90) Blake could have possibly used a bit of sarcasm in songs of experience. In songs of innocence some themes and symbols were the bags, abandoned in the dream and picked up again with the brushes the next morning. This says that the terrible burden of the childs life, which is the good indicates the corruption of a society that uses and abuses him. The coffins are like a symbol of death. They represent the chimneys that he sweeps and the actual death to which he will soon come. In contrast, the sun, river, and plain express the joys that should be natural to childhood, which is also a symbol of the way nature is appreciated in the romantic age. Yet, even symbols associated with happiness intensify the harsh facts of existence. The bright key recalls imprisonment; the harmony of the leaping boys emphasizes their isolation in the chimneys; and the lamb, whose curling fleece Toms hair resembles, is often, as is the sweeper, a helpless victim. Suddenly, by pulling together disparate sources of data, private information can be learned about an individual without their knowledge or consent. If the organization that is capable of computer matching is a government, it places a lot of information in the hands of a powerful entity. A question of whether the government should have this new information is a significant one. What if the government were not allowed to ask you for information that is discoverable through computer matching? Should the government be allowed to use this technique to yield the same information? This ethical dilemma is covered in this paper. Relevant information will be used from the laws in the United States and the European Union to illustrate the different perspectives on the privacy of citizens and the approaches each government takes to it. Humanity of the Primitive in Heart of Darkness, Dialect of Modernism and Totem and Taboo   Ã‚  Ã‚   The ways in which a society might define itself are almost always negative ways. "We are not X." A society cannot exist in a vacuum; for it to be distinct it must be able to define itself in terms of the other groups around it. These definitions must necessarily take place at points of cultural contact, the places at which two societies come together and arrive at some stalemate of coexistence. For European culture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries this place of contact—this new culture by which to define itself—came from Africa, from those "primitive" cultures whose society was being studied and in some ways appreciated for the first time. The African natives became the new Other, the new way to define what Europe was at that time.   Ã‚  Ã‚   The way in which this redefinition took place was through the institution of a fundamentally hierarchical system. "Primitive" versus "sophisticated," "barbarous" versus "cultured." The anthropology of the time—articulated primarily by Frazer—espoused an evolutionary view of humanity. Societies passed through several stages of development on their way to true civilisation, and, while the Europeans had made it all the way, the Africans were lagging just a bit behind. This, however, created a problem for Europe. If Africans were fundamentally the same as Europeans (albeit farther back on the evolutionary ladder), what did that say about the roots of European society? This uncertainty created a very disjunctive view of primitives in the literature of the time. In his book, The Dialect of Modernism, Michael North suggests that, "The colonial subject is either a part of nature, utter... ... intensely inhuman, Freud shows us that these things are all one.
